Prelude: Chanson

D. Wagner

The Lord will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me. -Psalm 42:8

Welcome & Call to Worship

[Psalm 8]

O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory above the heavens.

What are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them?

Yet you have made them a little lower than God, and crowned them with glory and honor.

You have given them dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under their feet.

O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Let us worship the LORD!

From All That Dwell Below the Skies (Hymn 229)

Geistliche Kirchengesang/Watts

From all that dwell below the skies let the Creator’s praise arise:
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Let the Redeemer’s name be sung through every land, in every tongue.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

In every land begin the song, to every land the strains belong:
Alleluia! Alleluia!
In cheerful sound all voices raise and fill the world with joyful praise.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Eternal are Thy mercies, Lord; eternal truth attends Thy word:
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Thy praise shall sound from shore to shore, till suns shall rise and set no more.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Confession

Lord Jesus, your kingdom is not of this world. We confess that we are accustomed to the ways of this world and too often rely on them for our own security and power. When these structures crumble or become corrupt, we are afraid for ourselves and our world. In your life and death, you showed us another way, a kingship of suffering and service. Forgive us when we do not know how to follow in your footsteps and embrace the path of vulnerability. Forgive us for imagining our future as though you were not with us. Give us courage to open our hearts and listen to your voice. Amen.

Solo: Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hearts (Hymn 511)

From plainsong, Mode II/attr. Bernard of Clairvaux

Betsy Hammond

Jesus, Thou joy of loving hearts, Thou fount of life, Thou light of all,
From the best bliss that earth imparts we turn, unfilled, to heed Thy call.

Thy truth unchanged hath ever stood; Thou savest those that on Thee call;
To them that seek Thee Thou art good, to them that find Thee, all in all.

Forgiveness in Jesus Christ

Peace

The peace of Christ be with you.

And also with you.

Gloria Patri (Hymn 579)

Greatorex

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,
Word without end. Amen, Amen.

Children’s Message

O Word of God Incarnate (Hymn 327)

Neuvermehrtes Meiningisches Gesangbuch/How

O Word of God incarnate, O Wisdom from on high,
O Truth unchanged, unchanging, O Light of our dark sky:
We praise You for the radiance that from the hallowed page,
A lantern to our footsteps, shines on from age to age.

The church from You, dear Savior, received this gift divine,
And still that light is lifted on all the earth to shine.
It is the chart and compass that, all life’s voyage through,
Amid the rocks and quicksands, still guides, O Christ, to You.

O make Your church, dear Savior, a lamp of purest gold
To bear before the nations Your true light, as of old;
O teach Your wandering pilgrims by this our path to trace,
Till, clouds and storms thus ended, we see You face to face.

Response: My Song Forever Shall Record

Melita/The Psalter

My song forever shall record the tender mercies of the Lord;
Thy faithfulness will I proclaim, and every age shall know Thy name.
I sing of mercies that endure, forever builded firm and sure.

Almighty God, Thy lofty throne has justice for its cornerstone;
And shining bright before Thy face are truth and love and boundless grace.
The heavens shall join in glad accord to praise Thy wondrous works, O Lord.

With blessing is the nation crowned whose people know the joyful sound;
They in the light, O Lord, shall live, the light Thy face and favor give.
Their fame and might to Thee belong, for in Thy favor they are strong.

[Psalm 89]

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, and deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
