Welcome & Call to Worship
[Psalm 19]
The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.
Day to day they pour forth speech, and night to night they declare knowledge.
There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard;
Yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.
Let us worship the LORD!
Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation (Hymn 417)
7th century, Latin/Smart
Christ is made the sure foundation, Christ the head and cornerstone,
Chosen of the Lord and precious, binding all the church in one;
Holy Zion’s help forever, and our confidence alone.
To this temple, where we call you, come, O Lord of Hosts, today;
With your wonted loving kindness hear your people as they pray,
And your fullest benediction shed within its walls alway.
Here bestow on all your servants what they ask of you to gain,
What they gain from you forever with the blessed to retain,
And hereafter in your glory evermore with you to reign.
Laud and honor to the Father, Laud and honor to the Son,
Laud and honor to the Spirit, ever three and ever one;
One in might and one in glory while unending ages run.
Confession
God of relationships, we look for places of belonging and groups where we feel at home. Forgive us when we define ourselves by exclusiveness or who we are against rather than by a shared purpose. Forgive us when we make things harder for those on the margins of our communities. Give us courage to welcome the complexities of relationships with people who are not like us, and set us free to love wholeheartedly. Amen.
Silence
Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days
Hernaman/American folk melody
As you did hunger and did thirst, so teach us, gracious Lord,
To die to self, and so to live by your most holy Word.
And thro’ these days of penitence, and thro’ your Passiontide,
Forevermore, in life and death, O Lord, with us abide.
Forgiveness in Jesus Christ
Peace
The peace of Christ be with you.
And also with you.
Gloria Patri (Hymn 579)
Greatorex
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,
Word without end. Amen, Amen.
Children’s Message
At the Name of Jesus (Hymn 148)
Noel/Vaughan Williams
At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow,
Every tongue confess him King of glory now;
‘Tis the Father’s pleasure we should call him Lord,
Who from the beginning was the mighty Word.
Humbled for a season, to receive a name,
From the lips of sinners, unto whom he came,
Faithfully he bore it spotless to the last,
Brought it back victorious, when from death he passed.
Bore it up triumphant, with its human light,
Through all ranks of creatures, to the central height,
To the throne of God-head, to the Father’s breast;
Filled it with the glory of that perfect rest.
Christians, this Lord Jesus shall return again,
With his Father’s glory o’er the earth to reign;
For all wreaths of empire meet upon his brow,
And our hearts confess him King of glory now.
