Prelude: All People That on Earth Do Dwell

Pachelbel

Welcome & Call to Worship

[Isaiah 40]

Why do you say, “My way is hidden from the Lord”?
Have you not known? Have you not heard?

The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.

He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.

He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless.

Let us worship the LORD!

All People That On Earth Do Dwell (Hymn 220)

Bourgeois/Kethe

All people that on earth do dwell, sing to the Lord with cheerful voice;
Him serve with mirth, his praise forth tell, come ye before him and rejoice.

Know that the Lord is God indeed; without our aid he did us make
We are his folk, he doth us feed, and for his sheep he doth us take.

O enter then his gates with praise, approach with joy his courts unto;
Praise, laud, and bless his name always, for it is seemly so to do.

For why? The Lord our God is good, his mercy is forever sure;
His truth at all times firmly stood, and shall from age to age endure.

Confession

Faithful God, when we are moving into new seasons of life, we are often afraid. Forgive us when we forget your steadfast love or question your care for us. When we have been striving towards a goal or dealing with difficulties, facing an uncertain future can feel exhausting. Teach us to wait for you and rest in you. By your Spirit, give us courage to move forward in hope, even in our brokenness. Amen.

Silence

Do Not Be Afraid

Patterson/Morris

Do not be afraid, for I am with you.
Chosen and beloved, you are my own.
Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you:
By your name I called you for my own.

Forgiveness in Jesus Christ

Peace

The peace of Christ be with you.

And also with you.

Gloria Patri (Hymn 579)

Greatorex

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,
Word without end. Amen, Amen.

Old Testament: Isaiah 40:27-31

New Testament: 2 Corinthians 4:7

Sermon: It Takes a lot of Courage

Focus: “…afterward many are strong at the broken places...”

Response: How Firm a Foundation (Hymn 361)

American folk melody

How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in God’s excellent Word!
What more can be said than to you God hath said,
To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?

“Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed,
For I am thy God, and will still give thee aid;
I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,
Upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.

“When through the deep waters I call thee to go,
The rivers of sorrow shall not overflow;
For I will be near thee, thy troubles to bless,
And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.

“The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose,
I will not, I will not desert to its foes;
That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I’ll never, no never, no never forsake.”

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, and deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
