Introit: Prelude on “MELITA”
Dykes/Smith
Welcome & Call to Worship
[Psalm 16]
Protect us, O God, for in you we take refuge. We keep the Lord always before us;
because he is at our right hand, we shall not be moved.
Therefore our hearts are glad, and our souls rejoice; our bodies also rest secure.
You show us the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy.
Let us worship the LORD!
The God of Abraham Praise (Hymn 488)
Hebrew melody/Daniel ben Judah
The God of Abraham praise, who reigns enthroned above;
The ancient of eternal days, the God of love!
The Lord, the great I Am, by earth and heaven confessed,
We bow before your holy name, forever blest.
Your spirit still flows free, high surging where it will;
In prophet’s word you spoke of old and you speak still.
Established is your law, and changeless it shall stand,
Deep writ upon the human heart, on sea, or land.
You have eternal life implanted in the soul;
Your love shall be our strength and stay, while ages roll,
We praise you, living God! We praise your holy name;
The first, the last, beyond all thought, and still the same!
Confession
God of personhood, you have called us to freedom. Forgive us when our understanding of freedom is skewed. Too often our culture values individualism and freedom from restraint more than honoring and serving one another in community. Spirit, help us find our grounding in you so that we may be free to interact from a place of authenticity and gratitude rather than fear or resentment. Plant us with your joy, gentleness, and generosity, and help us to grow. Amen.
Silence
Restore in Us, O God
Hopson/Daw
Restore in us, O God, the splendor of your love;
Renew your image in our hearts, and all our sins remove.
O Spirit, wake in us the wonder of your power;
From fruitless fear unfurl our lives like spring-time bud and flower.
Bring us, O Christ, to share the fullness of your joy;
Baptize us in the risen life that death cannot destroy.
Forgiveness in Jesus Christ
Peace
The peace of Christ be with you.
And also with you.
Gloria Patri (Hymn 579)
Greatorex
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, Word without end.
Amen, Amen.

Sermon: A Biblical Perspective on Freedom
Focus: You were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another.
Response: Great God, Your Love Has Called Us Here
Wren/MELITA
Great God, your love has called us here as we, by love, for love were made.
Your living likeness still we bear, though marred, dishonored, disobeyed.
We come, with all our heart and mind your call to hear, your love to find.
We come with self-inflicted pains of broken trust and chosen wrong,
Half free, half bound by inner chains, by social forces swept along,
By powers and systems close-confined yet seeking hope for humankind.
Great God, in Christ you set us free your life to live, your joy to share.
Give us your Spirit’s liberty to turn from guilt and dull despair
And offer all that faith can do while love is making all things new.
Pastoral Prayer & The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
