Shine, Jesus, Shine

Kendrick/arr. Hayes

Introit: We Have Come at Christ’s Own Bidding

Daw/White

Betsy Hammond

Call to Worship

[Psalm 99]

The Lord is great in Zion; he is exalted over all the peoples.

Let them praise your great and awesome name. Holy is he!

Mighty King, lover of justice, you have established equity;

you have executed justice and righteousness.

Extol the Lord our God; worship at his footstool. Holy is he!

Let us worship the LORD!

Christ, Whose Glory Fills the Skies

REDHEAD/Wesley

Christ, whose glory fills the skies, Christ, the true, the only light,
Sun of Righteousness, arise, triumph o’er the shades of night;
Dayspring from on high, be near; Daystar, in my heart appear.

Dark and cheerless is the morn unaccompanied by Thee;
Joyless is the day’s return till Thy mercy’s beams I see,
Till they inward light impart, cheer my eyes and warm my heart.

Visit then this soul of mine; pierce the gloom of sin and grief;
Fill me, radiancy divine; scatter all my unbelief;
More and more Thyself display, shining to the perfect day.

Confession

God of glory and love, you are beyond our understanding. Forgive us when we limit our imagination of your gospel to what we ourselves can comprehend and control. Forgive us for our fears and misdirected efforts. Help us listen to you and trust that you are at work in far more ways than we see. Gather us and ground us in your brilliant love, that our lives may reflect your light. Amen.

Be Thou My Vision (Hymn 339)

Irish ballad

Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
Nought be all else to me, save that Thou art.
Thou my best thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my wisdom, and Thou my true word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

Forgiveness in Jesus Christ

Peace

The peace of Christ be with you.

And also with you.

Gloria Patri (Hymn 579)

Greatorex

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,
Word without end. Amen, Amen.

Children’s Message

God of Our Life (Hymn 275)

Purday/Kerr

God of our life, through all the circling years, we trust in thee;
In all the past, through all our hopes and fears, thy hand we see.
With each new day, when morning lifts the veil,
We own thy mercies, Lord, which never fail.

God of the past, our times are in thy hand; with us abide.
Lead us by faith to hope’s true promised land; be thou our guide.
With thee to bless, the darkness shines as light,
And faith’s fair vision changes into sight.

God of the coming years, through paths unknown we follow thee;
When we are strong, Lord, leave us not alone; our refuge be.
Be thou for us in life our daily bread,
Our heart’s true home when all our years have sped.

Sermon: God’s Ways not Our Ways

Focus: The Grace of the Gospel is that it is not of us, controlled by us, or even really understood by us. We need to trust and listen.

Response: You, Lord, Are Both Lamb and Shepherd

Dunstan/French melody

You, Lord, are both Lamb and Shepherd, You, Lord, are both prince and slave.
You, peacemaker and sword-bringer of the way you took and gave.
You, the everlasting instant; you, whom we both scorn and crave.

Clothed in light upon the mountain, stripped of might upon the cross,
Shining in eternal glory, beggared by a soldier’s toss,
You, the everlasting instant, you who are both gift and cost.

You, who walk each day beside us, sit in power at God’s side.
You, who preach a way that’s narrow, have a love that reaches wide.
You, the everlasting instant; you who are our pilgrim guide.

Worthy is our earthly Jesus! Worthy is our cosmic Christ!
Worthy your defeat and victory; worthy still your peace and strife.
You, the everlasting instant; you, who are our death and life.

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Call to Stewardship

Kathy Sandusky

For you know the generous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich.

-2 Corinthians 8:9
