Introit:  Lead Me to Calvary

Hussey/Kirkpatrick

(Sung twice—please join on the repeat.)

King of my life, I crown thee now, thine shall the glory be;
Lest I forget thy thorn-crowned brow, lead me to Calvary.
Lest I forget Gethsemane, lest I forget thine agony,
Lest I forget thy love for me, lead me to Calvary.

Welcome & Call to Worship

[Psalm 118]

Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the LORD.

Hosanna! Save us, we beseech you, O LORD, give us success!

The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his steadfast love endures forever.

Let us worship the LORD!

All Glory, Laud, and Honor (Hymn 88)

Teschner/Theodulph of Orleans

Refrain:
All glory, laud and honor to Thee, Redeemer, King!
O see palm branches scattered; and we “Hosanna” sing.

Thou art the King of Israel, Thou David’s royal Son,
Who in the Lord’s name comest, our King and blessed One. (refrain)

The people of the Hebrews with palms before Thee went;
Our praise and prayers and anthems before Thee we present. (refrain)

To Thee, before Thy passion, they sang their hymns of praise;
To Thee, now high exalted, our melody we raise. (refrain)

You didst accept their praises; accept the prayers we bring.
Who in all good delightest, Thou true and gracious King! (refrain)

Confession

Almighty God, we are eager to praise you. However, too often our prayers and praises revolve around getting what we think we need from you, rather than being with you and understanding your work. Forgive us when our approach to you is transactional and we do not take time to truly see or know you. Thank you for continuing to act in love even when we turn away in disappointment, fear, or anger.  Forgive us when our turning away fuels resentment towards you and your kingdom.  Have mercy on us, heal our ways, and empower us by your Spirit to love as you do. Amen.

Silence

Song of Gratitude:  Surely It Is God Who Saves Me

Daw/BEACH SPRING

Surely it is God who saves me; I shall trust and have no fear.
For the Lord defends and shields me and his saving help is near.
So rejoice as you draw water from salvation’s healing spring;
In the day of your deliverance thank the Lord, his mercies sing.

Forgiveness in Jesus Christ

Peace

The peace of Christ be with you.

And also with you.

Children’s Message

When I Survey the Wondrous Cross (Hymn 101)

Mason/Watts

When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save in the death of Christ my God;
All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood.

See, from His head, His hands, His feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down;
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.

Sermon: Kicking Up the Dirt

Focus: As Jesus entered into Jerusalem, he wore upon his shoulders the hopes and dreams of who the crowd wanted him to be, but just long enough to reveal who he really was, the covenantal messiah!

Response: Recitativo-Fantasia (from Sonata in A Major)

Johannes Kleinmann, cello; Tiffany Wang, piano

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Giving our Gifts to God

Gary Guenther

I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. -Romans 12:1

Go to Dark Gethsemane (Hymn 97)

Montgomery/Redhead

Go to dark Gethsemane, all who feel the tempter’s power;
Your Redeemer’s conflict see, watch with Him one bitter hour;
Turn not from His griefs away, learn from Jesus Christ to pray.

Follow to the judgment hall; view the Lord of life arraigned;
O the wormwood and the gall! O the pangs His soul sustained!
Shun not suffering, shame, or loss; learn from Christ to bear the cross.

Calvary’s mournful mountain climb; there, adoring at His feet,
Mark the miracle of time, God’s own sacrifice complete;
“It is finished!” hear him cry; learn from Jesus Christ to die.
