Prelude: Lonely the Boat

Burkhardt

(based on BAI and ARIRANG, Korean folk songs)

Welcome & Call to Worship

[Jonah 2]

We called to the Lord out of our distress, and he answered us;

out of the belly of Sheol we cried, and you heard our voice.

You cast us into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the flood surrounded us;

all your waves and your billows passed over us.

As our life was ebbing away, we remembered the Lord;

and our prayer came to you, into your holy temple.

Let us worship the LORD!

Our God, Our Help in Ages Past (Hymn 210)

Croft/Watts

Our God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home:

Before the hills in order stood, or earth received its frame,
From everlasting Thou art God, to endless years the same.

A thousand ages in Thy sight are like an evening gone;
Short as the watch that ends the night before the rising sun.

Time, like an ever rolling stream soon bears us all away;
We fly forgotten, as a dream dies at the opening day.

Our God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come,
Be Thou our guard while life shall last, and our eternal home.

Confession

God of the depths, sometimes your ways of delivering and redirecting us do not look like deliverance at first. Forgive us when we have to be swallowed by trouble before we are willing to consider obedience or turn to prayer. Forgive us when our worship is more about getting what we need from you than it is about truly knowing you. Thank you for hearing us and seeking us. May we worship you in spirit and truth. Amen.

Response: I to the Hills Will Lift My Eyes (Hymn 234)

The Psalter/Scottish Psalter

I to the hills will lift my eyes; from whence shall come my aid?
My help is from the Lord alone, who heaven and earth has made.

God will not let your foot be moved, your Guardian never sleeps;
God’s watchful and unslumbering care protects and safely keeps.

Your faithful keeper is the Lord, your shelter and your shade;
‘Neath sun or moon, by day or night, you shall not be afraid.

From evil God will keep you safe, provide for all you need;
Your going out, your coming in, God will forever lead.

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, and deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
