Palm/Passion Sunday

Preparations

Before connecting with our virtual worship this Palm/Passion Sunday, please prepare grape juice/wine/other and bread for your celebration of the Lord’s Supper.  Dr. Starbuck will offer the Words of Institution (the minister shall invite the people to the Lord’s Table using suitable words from Scripture W-2.4011) from our own sanctuary through video, but in order to practice social distancing, you will need to pass your own cup and bread.  If you can, send us a picture of your communion setup at office@manito.org.

And….if you want to really throw yourself into worship, grab a few branches and put on at least one cloak (or coat), and when we sing Hosanna, Loud Hosanna together, place them on the floor like it is written in Matthew 21:8, Mark 11:8, and Luke 19:35.

Calling Ourselves to Worship [Psalm 118] (self-directed)

Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the LORD.

The LORD is God, and he has given us light.

The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his steadfast love endures forever.

Let us worship the LORD!

Hosanna, Loud Hosanna (Link: https://vimeo.com/399374917)

Gesangbuch der Herzogl/Threlfall

Hosanna, loud hosanna, the little children sang;

Through pillared court and temple the joyful anthem rang;

To Jesus, who had blessed them close folded to His breast,

The children sang their praises, the simplest and the best.

From Olivet they followed ‘mid an exultant crowd,

The victor palm branch waving, and chanting clear and loud;

The Lord of earth and heaven rode on in lowly state,

Nor scorned that little children should on His bidding wait.

“Hosanna in the highest!” That ancient song we sing,

For Christ is our Redeemer, the Lord of heaven our King.

O may we ever praise Him with heart and life and voice,

And in His blissful presence eternally rejoice.

Confession (Link: https://vimeo.com/403926720 )

God of heaven and earth, we give you thanks for sending Jesus Christ as our teacher. Forgive us when we keep listening to voices that would lead us to despair, and neglect listening to you. Comforted by your compassion toward your people in every age, we come to you in the midst of our current disorientation. Our lives are in your hands.

In our separateness from our normal lives, now, more than ever, we have become aware of how far we have drifted from you. Forgive us for the ways we have betrayed and denied you.

Heal our ways, and help us to walk in the way of your cross, that we would love you with all our heart and love our neighbors as ourselves. Amen.

Jesus I’ve forgotten the words that you have spoken.

Promises that burned within my heart have now grown dim.

With a doubting heart I follow the paths of earthly wisdom;

Forgive me for my unbelief, renew the fire again.

(Chorus)  Lord, have mercy; Christ have mercy; Lord, have mercy on me. (x2)

Jesus Walked This Lonesome Valley (Link: https://vimeo.com/403394905)

American Spiritual

Jesus walked this lonesome valley, He had to walk it by Himself;

O, nobody else could walk it for Him, He had to walk it by Himself.

We must walk this lonesome valley, We have to walk it by ourselves;

O, nobody else can walk it for us, We have to walk it by ourselves.

You must go and stand your trial, You have to stand it by yourself;

O, nobody else can stand it for you, You have to stand it by yourself.

Palm/Passion Sunday:  The Solitude of Witness

Focus: Loneliness is painful; solitude is peaceful. Loneliness makes us cling to others in desperation; solitude allows us to respect others in their uniqueness and create community. Letting our aloneness grow into solitude and not into loneliness is a lifelong struggle. –Henri Nouwen

 So just what does stewardship have to do with Holy Week and the Passion story? Actually, quite a lot. Holy Week provides an excellent chunk of time to be intentional about the stewardship of time, resources, and relationship. It provides seven days in which to focus on what really matters and to revisit in an intentional way the story of our Lord’s journey to the cross and resurrection from the bonds of death. It reminds us that even though we humans desire easy short-cuts and quick answers, sometimes we need to be deliberate about how we spend our hours, days, and finite resources. – Rev. Sharron Riessinger Blezard

“Minuet” from Robert de Visee’s Suite in D Minor

Calling Ourselves to Worship [Psalm 130] (self-directed)

From the depths we called you, LORD. Master, hear our voice!

May your ears listen close to the voice of our plea.

We hoped for the LORD, our being hoped, and for his word we waited.

Our being waits for the LORD more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning.

Let us worship the LORD!

Breathe on Me, Breath of God (Link:  https://vimeo.com/399369384)

Jackson/Hatch

Breathe on me, Breath of God, fill me with life anew,

That I may love what Thou dost love, and do what Thou wouldst do.

Breathe on me, Breath of God, until my heart is pure,

Until with Thee I will one will, to do and to endure.

Breathe on me, Breath of God, till I am wholly Thine,

Until this earthly part of me glows with Thy fire divine.

Breathe on me, Breath of God, so shall I never die,

But live with Thee the perfect life of Thine eternity.

Confession (Link: https://vimeo.com/401726718)

O Lord, we wait for you, and in your word we trust. At this time in Lent, we are very aware of the chaos in our world and the brokenness in our own lives. From these depths, O Lord, we cry out for you to act. We continue to trust your power and your care for us, but in our isolation, we struggle to see your wider vision. We feel restless and uncertain of how to move forward when so much keeps changing. Forgive us when we give in to our fears. Enliven us with determination to actively wait, watch, and engage with you. Amen.

We Come to You for Healing, Lord  (Link: https://vimeo.com/399374011)

American folk melody/Stuempfle

We come to you for healing, Lord, of body, mind, and soul,

and pray that by your Spirit’s touch we may again be whole.

As once you walked through ancient streets and reached toward those in pain,

we know you come among us still with power to heal again.

You touch us through physicians’ skill, through nurses’ gifts of care,

and through the love of faithful friends who lift our lives in prayer.

Through nights of pain and wakefulness, through days when strength runs low,

grant us your gift of patience, Lord, your calming peace to know.

We come to you, O loving Lord, in our distress and pain,

in trust that through our nights and days your grace will heal, sustain.

Calling Ourselves to Worship [Psalm 23] (self-directed)

The LORD is our shepherd, we shall not want.

In grass meadows he makes us lie down, by quiet waters guides us.

Our life he brings back. He leads us on pathways of justice for His name's sake.

Though we walk in the vale of death's shadow, we fear no harm, for he is with us.

Let us worship the LORD!

Great Is Thy Faithfulness (Link: https://vimeo.com/399515355)

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father,

There is no shadow of turning with Thee;

Thou changest not, Thy compassions they fail not;

As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.

Refrain: Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!

 Morning by morning new mercies I see;

 All I have needed Thy hand hath provided;

 Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,

Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above

Join with all nature in manifold witness

To Thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love. (Refrain)

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,

Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;

Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,

Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside! (Refrain)

Confession (Link: https://vimeo.com/399504909)

God of light and love, we all experience periods of darkness. When we see others suffering, we often ask, "Why?" Behind this question is our desire for control, to avoid suffering if we can. Forgive us when we do not stand firmly enough with those who are most vulnerable. Bring us into your light, that we may see ourselves rightly. Bring us into your light, that we may know ourselves loved, whatever happens. Open our eyes to your work, and show us ways to connect even when protecting others involves physical distance. Amen.

Dear Church Family,

Happy Sabbath and Home Worship!   You will find worship materials below that we lovingly gathered together  so that we might continue in worship and connection in our present moment.  I want to thank everyone who has given so  unsparingly in the mad rush to bring a viral order of worship together.  It is hardly “professional,” but it is us.  We miss each and every one  of you personally, but are together in the Holy Spirit.  We hope you will use this worship to gather  with at least one other person or within your family unit.  You can access this form of worship on your  computer, your pad, your tablet, or your phone.  Some of you can even access this by your TV through your phone!  Just make sure the volume is up!!!

Blessings on your Sunday and I look forward to being in touch next  week.

Calling Ourselves to Worship [Psalm 95]

The LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.

In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also.

The sea is his, for he made it, and the dry land, which his hands have formed.

Come, let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker! For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture.

Let us worship the LORD!

COME THOU FOUNT OF EVERY BLESSING   https://vimeo.com/397733534

Robert Robinson, 1758; Trad. American melody, 1813

Come, Thou fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing Thy grace;

Streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise:
Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above;
   Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it, mount of God’s unchanging love.

Here I raise my Ebenezer*; Hither by Thy help I’m come;
   And I hope, by Thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home:
Jesus sought me when a stranger, wand’ring from the fold of God;
   He, to rescue me from danger, interposed His precious blood.

O, to grace how great a debtor daily I’m constrained to be!
   Let that grace, now, like a fetter, bind my wand’ring heart to Thee:
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love;
   Here’s my heart, Oh, take and seal it; Seal it for Thy courts above.

Confession, Forgiveness, Pastoral Prayer       https://vimeo.com/397779215

Lord, you know who we are; you know everything we have done.

May your words to us provoke the truth: we fail a lot, but there is always the possibility of change.

Forgive us when we sink into shame and cannot see our many options for moving forward.

Forgive us when we keep trying to meet our needs in broken ways.

Show us a better way, and help us live in the abundance of your love. Amen.

THINK ABOUT HIS LOVE
https://vimeo.com/397733922

Walt Harrah, 1987

Think about His love, think about His goodness,
   Think about His grace that’s brought us through.
For as high as the heavens above so great is the measure of our Father’s love.
   Great is the measure of our Father’s love.

BE THOU MY VISION
https://vimeo.com/397734627

Trad. Irish Hymn, c. 8th cent; Trad. Irish melody

Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
   Nought be all else to me, save that Thou art.
Thou my best thought, by day or by night,
   Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Riches I heed not, nor vain, empty praise,
   Thou mine inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
   High King of Heaven, my treasure Thou art.

Be Thou my wisdom, and Thou my true word;
   I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
   Still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

Clear Water, by MARGARET FRANCIK

I once was bandaged,

bruised and worn.

Those wounds took great time

and sun upon my face

and searching in the deep place

to mend their ache.

But, oh, now I can reach out

Gently.

Did you ever know such a thing?

That our hands could be made

to hold clear water

in our palms?

Blessing

May the road rise up to meet you.

May the wind be always at your back.

May the sun shine warm upon your face;

the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,

may God hold you in the palm of His hand.
